House of Five Leaves
Masterless samurai Akitsu Masanosuke is a skilled and loyal swordsman, but his naïve, diffident nature has time and again caused him to be let go by the lords who have employed him. Hungry and desperate, he becomes a bodyguard for Yaichi, the charismatic leader of a gang called "Five Leaves." Although disturbed by the gang's sinister activities, Masa begins to suspect that Yaichi's motivations are not what they seem. And despite his misgivings, the deeper he's drawn into the world of the Five Leaves, the more he finds himself fascinated by these devious, mysterious outlaws.

Colorful Characters
schumie
A sort of Nick-Gatsby relationship makes this interesting as the somewhat innocent and observing ronin, Masa becomes more and more entangled in the House of Five Leaves' ambiguous dealings and even more ambiguous leader. You can't help but hope Masa will get away before getting hurt, but at the same time, you also hope he'll stay and learn a bit more about the colorful characters that call it home.
Gorgeous Art

I adore the art style - it's nice to see something with a bit of personality. The plot is intriguing and though the pace is slow, I think that suits it.

I just finished reading not simple. Its worth the read.
And I just love how this story is developing, can't wait for the next chapter and to hit the shelves :D
Very good

The artwork really catches my attention, somewhat simple and deceptively sloppy - but not really. Will buy for sure.
House of Five Leaves

Story premise seems promising and the characters are intriguing. The artwork doesn't look like what we see in most manga nowadays, but it doesn't change the fact that the mangaka is a good storyteller. I'm looking forward to read the continuation.
Nice

I love the art and how Japan is portrayed. I'm looking forward to more.
It reminds me a bit of Taiyou Matsumoto's Takemitsu Zamurai.
(Speaking of him, I would love for you to pick up No.5 which was dropped long ago after 2 volumes)
Amazing

This manga has the most amazing art. That is what hooked me. Now the sotry and characterization has turned out to be even more intriguing, I am so happy to have another samurai series. It feels like a film Kurosawa would do.
Glad yojimbo was used.
So going to buy this one!

I really like how character driven this manga is. The art is also wonderful and I enjoy the characters a lot. I already know I'm going to buy this one when it comes out.
Awesome

I absolutely loved the art style for this manga. I thought it was new and inspiring and I hope to see more original and beautiful styles like this. I also found the main character's personality very endearing and it makes me want to stick around and see how things pan out for him.
Howse O. Leaves

I find the character designs in this a bit odd, but I like them. This looks promising as it has an interesting conflict before it even gets into the second chapter.
OK, I want this

I have heard good things about this mangaka, and I'm totally sold on this book after one chapter. I like the art, I like the characters, and I like the story (so far). I'd buy the print edition today, if there was one yet. I'm looking forwards to reading the rest of this series.
Great start

"I'm a total sucker for anything Samurais especially Tokugawa era"
Took the words right out of my mouth.
I love that all my samurai comics have a different flair or aspect to them that makes them different from the rest, and this is no exception. That he was by initial appearances a weak willed incompetent samurai makes him a completely different breed from the likes of Ogami Itto or Manji or even Miyamoto Usagi.
I'm also liking the conflict of morality that's being set up for him.
Interesting....

Chapter one was great! It usually takes more than reading one chapter to get me interested in a series, but House of Five Leaves is definately an exception to this. I really want to see more of this series!
Not really my cup of tea
Shelly
Why say yojimbo in the translation? Shouldn't that just be translated as bodyguard? What's the point of leaving it in Japanese? That's annoying.
Other than that, the clean art style in this makes it easy to read. And the mangaka's sense of space is lovely.
But while original, I just don't care for the character designs all that much. It may just be me, but I'd rather not all the characters look like the love children of Peter Lorre and big-mouthed bass.
Thank you!
Jen
Thank you so much for bringing Natsume Ono's work to an English-speaking audience! I love her style and her characters so much. I'm really looking forward to reading House of Five Leaves! This first chapter has me excited already. :D
IKKI Samurais!
Soul
I'm a total sucker for anything Samurais especially Tokugawa era, Masa seems like that one guy you don't expect at all to whip ass but he does.
So I'm interested to see how his timid nature gets melted by the Yakuza.
Cool Title

Wow, a japanes manga done in an almost American indie comic style, so like Andi Watson. This is a really different look at the samurai era. I love the characters so far and I cannot wait to see more of this series. I also think culture notes with each chapter by the editor or translator would be very helpful, like what is being done for Rinne, Takahashi's new title.
interesting

Really liked the first chapter. It made me want to read more to see what was going to happen and learn more about the characters pasts.
